2023 Sustainability Report

Second year doing the Sustainability Report for Midas Safety. We had a new project manager on board this year, and one of the things he was open to was junking the portrait format of a printable report in favour of something designed more exclusively designed to be viewed on the screen.

We recycled the base photo of the solar panelled rooftop, as it remained the best available photo, but I included an enhancement on the visual I’d done for the A+A trade show wall in fall 2023. So it was a visual upgrade on last year’s image.

Widescreen format opened up new visual opportunities. Also though, new challenges as not a lot of available images were that wide compared to the height. However, I’d done a ton of work extending the background on the left for the A+A trade show in 2023, so that work was already done. Having the robot arm extending out of frame was a fun last minute addition… I’d started utilizing that effect later in the document for the section pages… once I’d had the request to add the robot arm photo, I realized it was a perfect opportunity to tie the section pages and the cover together, visual-thematically. I suppose I could make like I’d planned it out that way from the beginning, but… nope. It emerged organically.

The breakdown of the Governance page was necessitated by the photo I’d been given – it did not lend itself to such a wide treatment, and by virtue of table positioning, the CEO was actually the smallest party at the table. So, I broke it down into a “visual metaphor” of sorts… using a filmmaker’s technique of telling a visual story by virtue of proximity and positioning, even if wasn’t the actual photo anymore. I couldn’t think of a way to break the Community image out of the frame until I was going through some stock images I’d purchased and saw the Thumbs Up icon, and realized that could be my element, as it tied in with the thumbs ups being given by the staff pictured. The Environment page’s garbage bags were originally going to be it as far as the breakout graphics, but as the rest of the document took shape, I knew I needed to do something more interesting. And it was a lot of work, deciding what to capture, what not… and how many of the leaves. The Economic lines made for a fun extension. And then the Appendix… that took some lateral thinking on how to picture it. Last year I’d had a photo of “tabs” but didn’t want to just reuse it.
